Job Description

The University of Washington Tacoma School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL) invites applications for one (1) Assistant Professor ( tenure track ) position with an expected start date in September 2026 (UW Job Class Code: 10116). The focus of this position will be in healthcare leadership/administration and nursing. This is a full-time position with a nine-month service period during the academic year. Initial appointment will be for a three-year term, eligible for reappointment after a successful second-year review.

All faculty at the University of Washington engage in teaching, research, and service within their school, the University, and their professional community. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in multiple modalities, including online, hybrid, and in-person, in an urban-serving campus environment. The successful candidate will teach upper-division and graduate courses required of majors, and lower-division courses emphasizing health and healthcare leadership topics. Assistant professors are also required to maintain a program of research and participate on school- and campus-wide committees.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and engage in service that demonstrates cultural responsiveness to diverse and underrepresented groups and populations. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and mentor adult students from socially minoritized and historically underrepresented populations, e.g., immigrants, gender identity/fluidity, race, culture, and ethnicity.

  • Teaching experience in nursing education, nursing professional development, or related health professions education.


  • Experience working creatively and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.


  • Expertise in one or more of the following: healthcare leadership/management, care quality and/or health systems improvement, diseaseprevention/health promotion, chronic disease care, restorative (acute) care, community/population health,an advanced nursing specialty (indirect care), and/or health informatics/technology.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this position is $10,000 10,555 monthly ($90,000 94,995 annually per nine-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. As one of three campuses of the UW School of Nursing, the SNHCL is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The SNHCL currently offers two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership (BAHCL) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The BAHCL prepares students from a range of professions and backgrounds for careers in leadership positions across a spectrum of healthcare settings, including healthcare organizations, government, and industry. The undergraduate nursing program is designed for registered nurses (RN) to attain their BSN degree. This program emphasizes communication, critical thinking, equity, and social justice, care across the lifespan, leadership, research, and scholarship toward improving health outcomes, population health, and adapting to changes in healthcare. The school also offers a graduate degree, the Master of Nursing, that prepares nurses with in-depth knowledge and skills as systems leaders in a range of practice settings. Preliminary planning has begun for the development of a masters degree in healthcare leadership, a doctoral degree in nursing, and a pre-licensure program in nursing, resulting in a BSN.

The SNHCL supports the interdisciplinary mission of the campus through teaching, scholarly inquiry, and service. Within the campus' overall mission, the SNHCL focuses on the discovery and dissemination of knowledge that promotes health within an ethic of social justice. The SNHCL provides needed educational services to prepare professionals for leadership positions in advancing nursing practice and improving health. The curriculum emphasizes and fosters the integration of teaching, inquiry, and service through a community of learners.

Qualifications

Anearned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in nursing or in a healthcare-related field. If a clinicians doctorate is not in the field of nursing, the candidate must have a masters degree (or foreign equivalent)in the field of nursing. If the applicant is a licensed professional, they must be licensed inWashington state (or NLC Compact state if a nurse) by the time of appointment. Demonstrated record of (or demonstrated training/preparation for) high-quality research and teaching in the field of nursing and/or healthcare related fields; research record may be demonstrated by dissertation research, published research papers, and/or other evidenced-based scholarship; teaching record may be demonstrated through classroom, professional, or other healthcare-related instructional experience.
